Himachal Pradesh Public Works and Urban Development Minister Vikramaditya Singh urged students to stay away from drugs and use social media responsibly, saying strong moral values are essential for building a healthy society. He was speaking at the 91st birth anniversary celebrations of the 14th Dalai Lama at the Tibetan School in Chhota Shimla.
Expressing concern over the rising incidents of crime, violence against women and substance abuse among youth, the minister said schools, teachers and parents must work together to make students aware of the dangers of drug addiction, cyber threats and the misuse of social media. He stressed that education should focus not only on academics but also on character building and mental well-being.
Singh also said development should go hand in hand with environmental conservation, noting that unplanned growth has contributed to the impact of natural disasters in recent years. He urged students to play an active role in protecting the environment through greater awareness and plantation drives.
The minister honoured meritorious students, launched a Hepatitis-B screening campaign and announced ₹31,000 for cultural groups that performed during the event.
Referring to the Dalai Lama’s contribution, Singh said his presence in Dharamshala has given Himachal Pradesh a unique identity across the world and inspired generations through his message of compassion, peace and humanity.
