At just 26 years old, Avinash from Bahdala village in Una district has transformed a life marked by personal tragedy into one of dignity, independence, and entrepreneurial success. His journey reflects the impact of determination, skill, and timely government support through the Mukhyamantri Sukh Ashray Yojana, an initiative launched by Chief Minister Thakur Sukhvinder Singh Sukhu.
Avinash lost his father while studying in Class 5. His father worked as a daily wage labourer and was the family’s sole breadwinner. A few years later, he also lost his mother, leaving him and his brother to face life’s challenges without parental support.
Despite overwhelming hardships, Avinash remained committed to his education. After completing Class 10, he underwent mobile phone repairing training in Nangal and spent nearly seven years working at different repair shops, gaining valuable technical expertise and hands-on experience.
Two years ago, determined to become self-reliant, he opened a small mobile repair and accessories shop in Kapila Market, Una. Initially, the business offered only basic repair services, a few second-hand mobile phones, and limited accessories. Although customers appreciated his honest work and quality service, financial constraints made business expansion difficult.
A turning point came with the Mukhyamantri Sukh Ashray Yojana. Under the scheme, Avinash began receiving a monthly financial assistance of ₹4,000. More importantly, he was provided financial support of ₹2 lakh to establish and strengthen his self-employment venture. His brother also receives monthly assistance under the scheme.
The financial backing enabled him to upgrade his workshop with modern equipment, expand his inventory, and introduce additional technical services. Today, his shop sells new and refurbished smartphones, a wide range of mobile accessories, and provides professional repair services.
His business now attracts around 50 to 60 customers every day, generating a monthly income of nearly ₹45,000. Encouraged by growing customer trust and steady earnings, Avinash is planning to further expand his enterprise.
Reflecting on his journey, Avinash says there were moments when he believed moving forward would be impossible after losing both parents. The Mukhyamantri Sukh Ashray Yojana, however, gave him not only financial support but also the confidence to rebuild his future. He expresses heartfelt gratitude to Chief Minister Thakur Sukhvinder Singh Sukhu for creating opportunities that have enabled orphaned youth like him to stand on their own feet.
Launched on February 28, 2023, the Mukhyamantri Sukh Ashray Yojana is a pioneering initiative aimed at ensuring education, protection, and self-reliance for children and young people who have lost parental care. Himachal Pradesh became the first state in India to grant orphaned children the legal status of “Children of the State.” The government supports eligible beneficiaries up to the age of 27 years, including educational assistance, care, and financial aid of up to ₹2 lakh for self-employment.
According to District Programme Officer (ICDS) Harish Mishra, 84 young beneficiaries across Himachal Pradesh have already established businesses under the scheme. In Una district alone, 10 youth have received financial assistance totaling ₹20 lakh to start micro-enterprises.
Deputy Commissioner Jatin Lal said the district administration remains committed to ensuring that every eligible child benefits from the scheme through timely identification and outreach.
