Dharamshala, April 14: In a notable political development, 29-year-old Akshay Thakur, originally from Barthin in Bilaspur district of Himachal Pradesh, has been appointed as Secretary of the Mumbai unit of the Bharatiya Janata Yuva Morcha.
Akshay Thakur’s roots trace back to Himachal Pradesh, though his family has been settled in Mumbai for generations. His grandfather had moved to the city nearly a century ago for employment with a German company, while his father, Ajit Singh, later established his own business there. His mother, Meera Thakur, is currently serving as Vice President of a Mumbai Mahila Morcha unit.
Academically, Akshay pursued his higher education at University of Mumbai, earning a degree in management before briefly working in the private sector. He later transitioned into active politics, aligning himself with youth leadership initiatives.
Despite being based in Mumbai, Akshay maintains a strong emotional and cultural connection with Himachal Pradesh. He expressed deep interest in Himachali art, culture, and the Pahari language, and visits the state multiple times a year to stay connected with his roots.
Speaking on his new role, he stated that he aims to build his political career in Maharashtra while also serving as a bridge between the large Himachali community in Mumbai—estimated at around three lakh people—and the local socio-political landscape. He emphasized his commitment to amplifying the voice of Himachalis in the city and fostering stronger cultural ties between the two regions.
