Multiple complex cases successfully treated using robotic and fertility-preserving surgeries
Shimla, May 31, 2025: Fortis Hospital Mohali is emerging as a centre of excellence in Gynaecologic Oncology, delivering personalised and advanced treatment options for women battling complex cancers. Under the leadership of Dr Shweta Tahlan, Consultant – Gynae Onco-Surgery, the department has achieved successful outcomes in several challenging cases through the use of cutting-edge technology, including the Da Vinci Xi 4th Generation Robotic System.
Speaking at a press conference held in Shimla, Dr Tahlan said, “Our focus is on combining expert surgical judgement with multi-disciplinary planning to offer patient-centric, evidence-based treatment for gynaecologic cancers including those of the ovary, uterus, cervix, vulva, and rare sarcomas. Every care plan is customised, prioritising quality of life while ensuring optimal oncologic outcomes.”
In one remarkable case, an 84-year-old woman with uterine cancer and pre-existing heart disease underwent successful robot-assisted surgery. The minimally invasive nature of robotic procedures allowed for reduced blood loss, smaller incisions, and quick recovery, with the patient resuming her routine within three days.
Another case involved a 20-year-old woman with a large ovarian mass (20×25 cm) diagnosed as early-stage ovarian cancer. A fertility-sparing surgery was performed, preserving the uterus and one ovary while removing the tumour. Post-operatively, the patient recovered well, and her menstrual cycles returned to normal — a testament to the potential for young cancer patients to retain fertility with timely intervention and expert care.
In a third instance, a 60-year-old patient with advanced ovarian cancer underwent a combination of Cytoreductive Surgery (CRS) and Heated Intraperitoneal Chemotherapy (HIPEC). This advanced protocol, offered at only a few high-end tertiary care centres like Fortis Mohali, provides significant survival benefits in advanced cancer cases. The patient’s recovery was smooth and uneventful.
“Gynaecologic oncology is a specialised field that requires both surgical expertise and personalised care,” said Dr Tahlan. “At Fortis Mohali, we assess each case based on cancer type, stage, molecular profiling, and the patient’s individual health status to ensure optimal outcomes.”
Fortis Mohali continues to raise the benchmark in women’s cancer care with a commitment to clinical excellence, compassion, and innovation.
