Bishop Cotton School Hosts Interactive Discussion on M.S. Swaminathan’s Legacy

Shimla, May 24: The Cotton Society, the premier academic society of Bishop Cotton School (BCS), Shimla, organised an engaging interactive panel discussion on Saturday evening centred around the acclaimed biography “M. S. Swaminathan – The Man Who Fed India” authored by noted writer Priyambada Jayakumar.
The event was held at the historic Irwin Hall of Bishop Cotton School and witnessed the participation of distinguished guests, educators, students and members of the academic community. The discussion highlighted the extraordinary contributions of Prof. M.S. Swaminathan, regarded as the Father of India’s Green Revolution, and explored his lasting impact on Indian agriculture, food security and rural transformation.
Author Priyambada Jayakumar shared insights into the process of researching and writing the biography, reflecting on the life, vision and global influence of the Bharat Ratna awardee. The session also delved into contemporary agricultural challenges and the relevance of Swaminathan’s ideas in present times.
The panel discussion featured eminent personalities including historian and author Raja Bhasin, MLA and President of All India Kisan Congress Sukhpal Singh Khaira and Amit Singh Chauhan, Director, National Horticulture Board. The panelists exchanged perspectives on agricultural reforms, sustainability, food policy and the role of innovation in strengthening India’s farming sector.
The event reflected Bishop Cotton School’s continued commitment towards intellectual engagement, academic dialogue and exposure to contemporary national issues through meaningful conversations and scholarly interactions.
The evening concluded with an interactive session with the audience followed by dinner at the Headmaster’s Lodge.
