DC Mukesh Repaswal chairs session on strengthening disaster resilience in flood-prone areas
Chamba, September 2: A special consultation workshop on reducing financial vulnerability arising from natural disasters such as floods was held at the National Informatics Centre (NIC) video conferencing room here on Tuesday under the chairmanship of Deputy Commissioner Mukesh Repaswal.
Experts from the Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Ropar, Queensland University of Technology, Australia, and Krea University, Chennai, participated virtually in the workshop.
The session focused on the economic conditions of flood-affected families, the impact of disasters on their livelihoods, long-term post-disaster recovery measures and ways to strengthen their capacity to cope with future disasters.
Briefing the experts about the geographical conditions of the district, Deputy Commissioner Mukesh Repaswal said advance preparedness and risk identification were essential to minimise the damage caused by natural disasters such as floods. He said scientific studies, combined with appropriate use of local knowledge, could help reduce the financial and social vulnerability of affected families and strengthen their recovery capacity.
The project aims to expand the focus of disaster management beyond relief and recovery by strengthening preparedness, financial security, livelihood continuity and long-term disaster resilience.
Additional Deputy Commissioner Amit Mehra shared important information related to flooding in the district with the experts.
Assistant Engineer, Jal Shakti Department, Gaurav Kumar, also apprised the participants of departmental measures being undertaken in flood-affected areas of Chamba district.
Dr. Sagar, Dr. Savina, Prof. Deepa Sarkar, Yasmeen, Senior Researcher Devoparna Ponder and Rituraj Mahanta, among other experts, participated virtually in the workshop.
