Shimla, Feb 24 – CITU-led protests erupted outside National Law University, Ghandal, Shimla over the alleged illegal termination of 64 daily-wage workers by the university administration. Protesters accused the university of violating Himachal Pradesh High Court orders, which had put a stay on new recruitments, yet hiring through outsourcing continued.
Demonstrators blocked the main gate and staged a two-hour sit-in, denouncing the administration’s “dictatorial approach.” CITU leaders Vijender Mehra, Balak Ram, Vivek Kashyap, Asha, Pankaj, and Rajneesh Kumar addressed the protest, condemning the hire-and-fire policy and the exploitation of workers.
The terminated employees, who worked in cleaning, security, hostels, driving, carpentry, plumbing, and electrical maintenance, alleged they were overworked, denied minimum wages, overtime pay, medical benefits, and EPF/ESI coverage.
CITU demanded:
- Immediate reinstatement of 43 workers.
- Regularization of daily-wage employees.
- End to arbitrary layoffs and exploitation.
- Implementation of labor laws at the university.
CITU warned of intensified agitation if their demands were not met.
