Mandi, May 22: Former Himachal Pradesh Chief Minister and Leader of Opposition Jairam Thakur on Thursday launched a sharp attack on the Congress-led Sukhu government, alleging that the state has suffered due to “false guarantees, heavy taxation and anti-people policies” during the past three-and-a-half years.
In a statement issued from Mandi, Jairam Thakur claimed that the Congress government, which came to power promising “system change,” has failed to deliver any major development work on the ground. He alleged that developmental activities across the state have come to a standstill and every section of society is feeling disappointed with the government’s performance.
The BJP leader accused the Congress government of withdrawing benefits introduced by the previous BJP regime despite promising 300 units of free electricity before the elections. He said the government not only failed to fulfil its promise but also discontinued the earlier provision of 125 units of free electricity provided to consumers.
Jairam Thakur questioned the delay in implementing the Congress party’s election promises, including ₹1,500 monthly assistance to women above 18 years of age and employment opportunities for youth. He alleged that despite promising five lakh jobs, the government has failed to provide employment even to 25,000 people during its tenure.
Criticising the government over rising utility costs, he claimed that people in rural areas are facing high water bills and increasing financial pressure. He also alleged that farmers and milk producers are struggling due to lack of proper government procurement and support mechanisms.
The former Chief Minister further accused the state government of using central government funds for publicity of its own schemes while ignoring public concerns and demands.
Referring to recent local body elections, Jairam Thakur rejected the Congress party’s claims of victory and asserted that BJP-supported candidates secured overwhelming public support. He said people of Himachal Pradesh are increasingly frustrated with what he termed “misgovernance, corruption and unfulfilled promises” of the current government.
He claimed that the growing public anger against the Congress government would be reflected in upcoming elections through strong support in favour of the BJP.
