7 Dead, 3 Missing in Vishnugad–Pipalkoti Tunnel Incident

Chamoli, August 13, 2026: Seven workers were killed and three others went missing after a large volume of water and debris suddenly entered the Tail Race Tunnel (TRT) of the Vishnugad–Pipalkoti Hydroelectric Project (VPHEP) at around 6:20 PM on August 13.

At the time of the incident, 22 workers deployed by Hindustan Construction Company (HCC) were carrying out concrete lining work inside the tunnel. Twelve workers were rescued and admitted to nearby hospitals, while one injured worker was later discharged after treatment.

Relief and rescue operations were launched immediately in coordination with the district administration. Joint teams of THDCIL, HCC, NDRF, SDRF, CISF and the district administration are conducting search operations for the missing workers and clearing water and debris from the tunnel.

Senior THDCIL officials, including the Managing Director, are overseeing the rescue operation at the site. The company has said that locating the missing workers remains its highest priority and that all necessary resources are being deployed.

THDCIL has expressed condolences to the families of the deceased and assured medical assistance and all possible support to the injured workers and affected families. A detailed assessment into the cause and circumstances of the incident will be conducted in coordination with the competent authorities.
