Solar-Powered Irrigation Transforms Agriculture in Remote Jolna-2 Village of Chamba

1 min read

Chamba April 06: Jolna-2 village, nestled in the remote Bhatiyat Assembly segment of Chamba district, has witnessed a significant agricultural transformation thanks to the efforts of the Agriculture Department. Through a solar-powered lift irrigation scheme worth ₹14.3 lakh, farmers in this backward region now enjoy access to assured irrigation—bringing 56 bighas of land under regular water supply.

Implemented by the Soil Conservation Division of the Agriculture Department, the project includes a sump well, 240 meters of pipeline, a 10HP solar pump system, and an 18,000-liter irrigation tank. Additionally, a sprinkler-based micro-irrigation system was installed to distribute water efficiently to the fields.

Fifteen progressive farmers including Ravinder Singh, Bharat Bhushan, and Salima are already seeing improved wheat crop yields this season. They plan to diversify into cash crops and vegetables post-harvest, boosting income and moving away from reliance on rain-fed farming.

Sub-Divisional Soil Conservation Officer Chandrashekhar informed that the project was funded under the Sub Plan for Backward Classes during FY 2023–24, with support from the Deputy Commissioner of Chamba. The intervention is expected to usher in economic stability and prosperity in the previously water-scarce region.
