Shimla, May 23, 2026 — In a strong initiative aimed at combating the growing menace of synthetic drug abuse among youth, the Himalayan Sports and Culture Youth Club Shimla officially launched the Shimla Cricket Carnival 2026 on Friday under the social campaign theme ” Quit Drugs, Play Sports
The grand launching ceremony was held at the Rotary Club on The Mall, Shimla, where Shimla Urban MLA Harish Janartha attended as the Chief Guest. Organizers described the event as a large-scale youth movement focused on promoting sports, discipline, and community engagement as an alternative to drug addiction.
According to the organizers, recent reports highlighting the increasing spread of synthetic drugs such as Chitta among Himachali youth have made social interventions through sports more urgent than ever. The carnival aims to channel the energy of young people toward healthy competition and teamwork while creating awareness against substance abuse.
The tournament has been designed to ensure maximum participation from across all 34 wards of the Municipal Corporation Shimla. The first phase will feature grassroots-level “Gully Cricket” matches played with red cloth balls, allowing easy participation for local youth. More than 600 players are expected to take part. The top 16 teams will later compete in knockout matches using white leather balls in a professional tournament format.
Apart from youth teams, the carnival will also feature an Institutional League involving teams from government departments, public sector units, banks, media organizations, and the Bar Council. A dedicated Women’s Tournament with four participating teams has also been included to promote women’s participation in sports and social awareness campaigns.
In collaboration with the Himachal Pradesh Cricket Association, the event will additionally provide opportunities for talent scouting and professional cricket coaching.
In a first for Shimla, several matches will be played under professional floodlights at Police Ground, Bharari, from June 1 to June 13, 2026, offering spectators a unique day-and-night cricket experience in the capital city.
The organizers also announced a special environmental initiative titled “Every Dot Ball, One Tree,” under which one native tree will be planted for every dot ball bowled during the tournament, linking sports with environmental conservation.
The Shimla Cricket Carnival 2026 has been dedicated to the memory of late members Sanjeev Thakur, Avinash Negi, Amit Thakur, and Neeraj Thakur. Organizers have appealed to citizens, corporate sponsors, and the media to support the movement for a drug-free and greener Shimla.
