RKMV Shimla Organises Workshop on Representations of Women and (Dis)Empowerment
Shimla, 1 October 2026: The English Literary Society “MUSE” of Rajkiya Kanya Mahavidyalaya (RKMV), Shimla, organised an interactive workshop on “From Myths to Market: Representations of Women and the Question of Women (Dis)Empowerment.”
The workshop was conducted by Dr. Pankaj K. Singh, Former Professor and Chairperson, Department of English, and Dean, Faculty of Languages, Himachal Pradesh University, Shimla.
The workshop aimed to provide students with a critical understanding of the ways in which women have been represented across literary, cultural and contemporary media contexts. It focused on examining the evolution of representations from mythological archetypes to market-driven images and encouraged students to analyse how literature, media and commercial forces can shape perceptions of women and reinforce or challenge gender stereotypes.
In her insightful deliberation, Dr. Singh traced these changing representations and explored the complex relationship between representation, empowerment and disempowerment. She encouraged students to question established narratives, examine representations critically and develop an informed perspective as readers, learners and thinkers.
The session was highly interactive and thought-provoking, with students of the Department of English actively participating in the discussion and sharing their views.
Principal Dr. Anurita Saxena thanked the resource person for the insightful academic engagement and said that such workshops are important for developing critical thinking, promoting gender sensitisation and broadening the intellectual horizons of students. She encouraged the students to recognise their potential, think independently and pursue their aspirations with confidence.
