Month-Long HIMAL-CARE Plus Programme on Climate Adaptation and Disaster Management Begins in Dharamshala

Dharamshala, June 25: A month-long national training and internship programme, HIMAL-CARE Plus (Himalayan Climate Adaptation and Resilience Education), has commenced in Dharamshala to equip youth with knowledge and practical skills on climate change adaptation, water security, and disaster risk reduction in the Himalayan region.

The programme, jointly organised by the Department of Geography, H.N.B. Garhwal University, Srinagar (Uttarakhand), and the Centre for Himalayan Research, Indraprastha College for Women, University of Delhi, will continue until July 22, 2026.

Speaking at the inaugural session, Kangra Deputy Commissioner **Hemraj Bairwa** emphasized that scientific knowledge, research, and community participation are essential for addressing environmental challenges and achieving climate-resilient development.

Experts highlighted the importance of scientific water management, spring-shed conservation, glacier protection, biodiversity conservation, and sustainable use of natural resources. They stressed that practical field studies and community engagement are crucial for understanding the fragile Himalayan ecosystem.

The programme includes hands-on training in climate change adaptation, water quality assessment, GIS and GPS mapping, meteorology, disaster risk reduction, and village-level climate action planning. Participants will also undertake field visits across Himachal Pradesh and Uttarakhand to gain practical experience in environmental conservation and climate resilience.
