Demands CBI Probe into Vimal Negi’s Death
Shimla, March 24, 2025 – Leader of Opposition Jairam Thakur has strongly criticized the deteriorating law and order situation in Himachal Pradesh, stating that the government has left the state’s security “to the mercy of fate.” He demanded a CBI probe into the suspicious death of Vimal Negi, questioning why the police showed no urgency in finding the missing officer and why his body was discovered five days after his death, despite him being missing for nine days. He warned that the case appears to be part of a larger conspiracy, raising concerns about faith in the government and the system.
Thakur also raised alarms over drug-related deaths and rising crime in the state, pointing out that 14 people have died due to drug overdoses in 81 days despite the government claiming a 30% reduction in drug abuse. He criticized the police’s inefficiency, stating that instead of controlling crime, they are engaged in political tasks.
Further highlighting the crime surge, Thakur noted that over 180 murders, 600 rapes, and 2,000 thefts have occurred in the past two years. He cited recent cases, including a robbery and shooting of a dhaba owner in Mandi, an attack on police officers by liquor mafia, and Khalistani slogans being raised in Sundernagar. He questioned how armed youth with banned flags and no-number-plate vehicles managed to enter 250 km into the state without action.
The opposition leader also pointed to timber mafia violence against forest officials, accusing the government of shielding criminals and sending the wrong message by allowing hooliganism to thrive. He warned that if strict action isn’t taken, crime will spiral further out of control.
Separately, Jairam Thakur met Haryana Assembly Speaker Harvinder Kalyan during his visit to Himachal Pradesh Vidhan Sabha, attending a luncheon hosted by Speaker Kuldeep Pathania.
