Chamba, May 25: Deputy Commissioner Mukesh Repaswal on Sunday said that protecting youth from drug abuse is a collective responsibility and asserted that there is no place in society for drug trafficking or those involved in such illegal activities.

Chairing a district-level meeting of the Narco Coordination Committee at the NIC Video Conference Hall, the Deputy Commissioner reviewed measures related to prevention of narcotics, monitoring and enforcement mechanisms across the district.

Mukesh Repaswal directed officials of various departments to take strong and effective steps, especially in schools and colleges, to prevent the spread of chitta and other intoxicants. Expressing concern over the increasing use of tobacco products such as khaini among youth, he instructed departments to ensure strict enforcement against banned products including gutka and khaini.

He asked the Education Department to appoint nodal teachers in schools for awareness campaigns, counselling sessions and installation of complaint boxes related to substance abuse. The Police Department was directed to maintain constant surveillance in sensitive areas.

The Deputy Commissioner also instructed Himachal Road Transport Corporation officials to install digital awareness screens at bus stands and explore the installation of cameras in buses operating on vulnerable routes to curb drug trafficking.

He further stated that snooker clubs and similar establishments operating in the district must be registered with the nearest police station and would be subject to regular inspections.

Superintendent of Police Vijay Singh Saklani informed during the meeting that 43 cases under the NDPS Act have been registered in Chamba district so far in 2026. Police have seized 15.578 kg charas, 371.64 grams heroin/chitta and 2.169 kg poppy plants while arresting 64 accused persons, including 20 from outside Himachal Pradesh.

The SP added that action has also been taken against five government employees found involved in NDPS-related cases, including suspensions and dismissals. He said police are following a zero-tolerance policy against drug abuse and trafficking in the district.
