People Troubled by Misgovernance and False Promises,
Solan, May 09: Former Chief Minister and Leader of Opposition Jai Ram Thakur on Saturday intensified the BJP’s campaign for the Solan Municipal Corporation elections, launching a sharp attack on the Congress government led by Chief Minister Sukhvinder Singh Sukhu.
Addressing a public gathering during a campaign and public outreach programme at Ganj Bazaar in Solan, Jai Ram Thakur alleged that people of the state were fed up with misgovernance, false promises and corruption under the present Congress regime and were ready to give a strong democratic response in the upcoming elections.
He claimed that the BJP had always stood for development, good governance and public welfare, while accusing the Congress government of halting developmental works after coming to power. Recalling his tenure, he said Solan, Mandi and Palampur were granted Municipal Corporation status to accelerate urban development through enhanced central funding, but the Congress government instead imposed additional tax burdens on residents of merged areas.
Jai Ram Thakur further alleged that the state government attempted to delay Panchayati Raj and local body elections and ignored judicial observations due to fear of defeat. Expressing concern over Solan city’s condition, he said the Congress-led Municipal Corporation had failed to address basic civic issues, including waste management, while development projects sanctioned during the BJP government had been stalled.
Taking a dig at Chief Minister Sukhu, he remarked that wherever the Chief Minister campaigns, BJP gains political advantage, citing election outcomes in Assam and West Bengal.
The BJP leader appealed to voters to elect all 17 BJP candidates in the Solan Municipal Corporation elections and expressed confidence that BJP would form the next corporation in Solan.
Senior BJP leaders including Sanjay Tandon, Suresh Kashyap, Balbir Verma and other party leaders were also present during the campaign.
