Tomato Prices: Solan Mandi Records Price Reduction

In the vegetable market, two weeks ago, B-grade tomatoes were being sold for up to INR 1,800 per crate. Now, even A-grade tomatoes are not fetching such high prices in the market. In Solan’s vegetable market, A-grade tomatoes were sold for INR 1,250 per crate on Thursday. Tomatoes were sold at rates ranging from INR 18 to 50 per kilogram, based on their quality. However, the previous season’s tomatoes are now being sold at INR 500 per crate. According to the Mandi Committee and experts, the possibility of further price reduction in the coming days cannot be ruled out.

Tomatoes from Bangalore and Nashik are flooding major markets like Kolkata and Delhi. Traders from these markets have now stopped coming to Solan mandi. Instead, they are directly purchasing tomatoes from Bangalore and Nashik, as it proves to be a more economical option compared to buying from Solan. Some local farmers are even transporting their produce to markets in Panipat and Sonipat, where tomatoes from Solan are being sold at a price higher by INR 200 to 400 per crate. The ready-to-harvest crop has already been prepared in the district.

Even the A-grade tomatoes, which were previously sold at higher rates, are not fetching good prices for the farmers. If the tomato prices further drop in the upcoming days, farmers who have invested in the ready-to-harvest crop might struggle to cover their costs. Solan Mandi Committee Secretary Dr. Ravi Sharma mentioned that the arrival of tomatoes from other states like Delhi and Kolkata has triggered a price drop due to increased supply in those markets. The prices may continue to decrease in the near future. In Solan, on Thursday, tomatoes were sold at rates ranging from INR 18 to 50 per kilogram, based on their grade.
