Perilous Conditions Persist Along Kalka-Shimla National Highway
Landslides Pose Threat to Buildings and Commuters
Despite the pause in rainfall, the woes for vehicle operators continue from Parwanoo to Solan on the Kalka-Shimla National Highway. Several stretches of the road are now facing erosion, with Dharampur-Kumarhatti being the latest addition to the list following Tandoor and Chakki Mode. The situation has raised concerns about the safety of Sihardi village beneath the affected portion of the highway.
Although a noticeable reduction in noise pollution from various vehicles was observed on Thursday at Chakki Mode, the highway was again closed in the evening due to more debris coming onto the road. The presence of debris on the highway has resulted in vehicle restrictions.
Presently, there is ongoing construction work on the alternate route from Dosarka to CRPF Gate, leading to the Old Roadway. However, the hilly terrain poses challenges for vehicles, exacerbated by pre-existing instances of landslides.
A surprising fact is that this road has previously suffered multiple landslides as well. This situation has prompted questions about the construction company’s responsibilities. Nearby private hotels are also facing danger, with roads collapsing near Hotel Dharampur and a private hotel near Sainwara.
Similarly, the road near the Sadhupul Bazaar, which experienced a landslide, has led to the temporary closure of the market for three days. While the SDM had ordered the deployment of laborers to clear the debris on Wednesday, none arrived on Thursday, causing frustration among the locals.
Local shop owners Lokesher Sharma, Pawan Thakur, Harbans Sharma, and Nishu highlighted that the administration had assured that the work of installing the retaining wall and RCC walls would begin from August 17 in Ashwani Khaddar. However, no laborers turned up on Thursday. They have appealed to the Chief Minister to expedite the installation of the retaining wall in Ashwani Khaddar.
