Tehri Sets Benchmark with India’s First Variable Speed Pumped Storage Plant

Rishikesh, 4 June 2025 – THDC India Limited (THDCIL) marked a historic milestone with the commencement of Commercial Operation Declaration (COD) of the first 250 MW unit of India’s first Variable Speed Pumped Storage Plant (PSP) at Tehri, Uttarakhand.
Union Minister Sh. Manohar Lal inaugurated the plant virtually, calling it a bold step towards India’s energy self-reliance. The 1000 MW Tehri PSP is now the largest of its kind commissioned by a CPSE and a key development in renewable integration.
Secretary (Power) Sh. Pankaj Agarwal termed it a breakthrough in enhancing grid flexibility, while NTPC CMD Sh. Gurdeep Singh lauded the project as a benchmark in hydropower engineering.
THDCIL CMD Sh. R.K. Vishnoi noted that the plant will raise Tehri’s total capacity to 2400 MW and improve round-the-clock power delivery. GE Vernova supplied the high-end variable-speed equipment.
The launch highlights India’s growing capabilities in clean, flexible power infrastructure, reinforcing its commitment to sustainable energy leadership.
