Jairam Thakur Claims BJP Registers ‘Historic Victory’ in First Phase of Himachal Panchayat Polls

Mandi, May 27: Former Himachal Pradesh Chief Minister and Leader of Opposition Jairam Thakur on Tuesday claimed that BJP-backed candidates secured a “historic victory” in the first phase of Panchayati Raj elections across the state, while alleging a major setback for the ruling Congress.

In a statement issued from Mandi, Jairam Thakur said that BJP-supported candidates for Pradhan and Up-Pradhan posts won in nearly 75 percent of panchayats during the first phase of elections. He described the results as a reflection of growing public support for nationalism and development-oriented politics in rural Himachal Pradesh.

Highlighting the party’s performance in the Seraj Assembly constituency, the BJP leader claimed that BJP-backed candidates emerged victorious in 25 out of 28 panchayats, while Congress managed to win in only two.

Expressing gratitude to the voters of Seraj and the state, Jairam Thakur said the public had rejected what he termed the “anti-people policies” of the Congress government. He added that people now understand that real development of villages and local areas is possible only with BJP support and cooperation from the Centre under a “double-engine government.”

The Leader of Opposition also accused the Congress government of delaying Panchayat elections despite knowing that the results would not favour the ruling party. He alleged that developmental activities at the Panchayat level suffered due to the delay and accused the government of failing to effectively implement central assistance schemes.

Referring to a recent Supreme Court observation regarding the “Special Intensive Revision” (SIR) process, Jairam Thakur alleged that the Congress party had been misleading people for political gains. He claimed the apex court’s remarks had exposed what he called the Congress party’s “vote-bank politics.”

The BJP leader thanked the people for their support in the first phase and appealed for similar backing during the second phase of Panchayat elections scheduled later this week.
