Tomato Prices Drop Due to Heavy Supply from Bangalore and Nashik
2 min readThe prices of tomatoes in the state have seen a significant decline due to the abundant supply of tomatoes from Bangalore and Nashik in the vegetable markets of other states. The prices of tomatoes have dropped from four to 25 rupees per kilogram. The cost of a crate of Grade A tomatoes has reached up to 625 rupees. Tomatoes from the previous season’s crop were sold for up to 100 rupees per crate. The plummeting prices of tomatoes have caused concern among farmers. Despite the tomato prices being around 50 rupees per kilogram in the market, the common people are still being charged more.
Tomatoes from Bangalore and Nashik are now flooding the major markets like Kolkata and Delhi. Businesspersons from the larger markets have also stopped coming to the Solan market. They are now only purchasing tomatoes from Bangalore and Nashik. On the other hand, due to heavy rainfall in the state, traders from other states are not preferring to come here. As a result, some traders are purchasing tomatoes from local markets. This has made it difficult for farmers to cover their costs. Some local farmers are sending their tomatoes to markets in Panipat and Sonipat, where a crate of tomatoes is selling for 200 to 400 rupees more than the prices in Solan.
Dr. Ravindra Sharma, Secretary of the Solan Mandi Committee, explained that there is an excessive supply of tomatoes from other states like Delhi and Kolkata, leading to a decrease in tomato prices. This situation is likely to cause a decrease in prices for the next couple of weeks. After that, there is a possibility of prices rising again.
