Solan, April 20
Dr. Neetika Kimta, Assistant Professor at the School of Biological and Environmental Sciences, Faculty of Science, Shoolini University, secured a research grant of ₹17.35 lakh under the Prime Minister Early Career Research Grant scheme of the Anusandhan National Research Foundation. The project has been approved for a 36-month duration.
Titled ‘Valorization of Phyllanthus emblica L. fruit peel for pectin-derived edible coating synthesis and its functional efficacy in extending the shelf life and post-harvest preservation of Malus domestica Borkh. Cultivars’, the study focuses on developing sustainable solutions in food preservation.
The research will explore the use of amla (Indian gooseberry) fruit peel to extract pectin and create biodegradable edible coatings. These coatings aim to improve shelf life and maintain the post-harvest quality of apple cultivars.
The work also addresses post-harvest losses through waste valorisation and promotes environmentally responsible preservation methods aligned with global sustainability priorities.
Dr. Neetika Kimta belongs to Village Thana (Tikkar), Tehsil Rohru, District Shimla, Himachal Pradesh, and the project also reflects a strong connection to the region by addressing post-harvest challenges in fruit crops.
Dr. Kimta’s research spans Botany, Plant Physiology, and Nanotechnology. She has published 35 research papers and authored the book ‘Medicinal Plants and Their Nanoparticles: A Double-Bladed Sword Against Human Diseases’, published by Springer Cham.
