Shimla, April 26, 2026: Former Chief Minister and Leader of Opposition Jairam Thakur has criticised the Congress over reports of charging ₹5,000 as an application fee for local body election tickets, questioning the intent behind the move.
In a statement issued from Shimla, Thakur said that charging party workers for merely applying for tickets raises concerns, as the amount is reportedly non-refundable irrespective of selection. He termed the move inappropriate, stating that seeking candidature is a democratic right and should not involve financial barriers.
He further alleged that such practices are unprecedented at the local level and questioned whether the funds are being used for public purposes or party interests.
The opposition leader also raised concerns over the state’s healthcare system, claiming that basic medical facilities remain inadequate despite claims of advanced services. He pointed to issues such as shortage of doctors, medicines, and specialists, and said that improving primary healthcare infrastructure should be a priority.
Thakur urged the government to focus on strengthening essential services rather than making what he described as “tall claims,” and called for better utilisation of available resources to improve healthcare delivery across the state.
