Jairam Thakur Meets Fasting Taxi Union Leaders, Questions Government Action
Shimla, August 27, 2026: Leader of Opposition and former Chief Minister Jairam Thakur visited Chaura Maidan on Thursday to meet taxi union representatives observing a hunger strike and hear their demands.
Accompanied by BJP MLAs Balbir Verma, Dr Hans Raj and Lokender Kumar, Thakur criticised the alleged forceful removal of protesters, calling the government’s approach undemocratic. He said peaceful protest is a constitutional right and urged the administration to listen to the concerns of taxi operators rather than suppress their voice.
Thakur also spoke with senior administrative and police officials at the site, questioning the decision to remove the protesters. He assured the taxi operators that the Opposition would stand with them and raise their concerns strongly in the Assembly.
The taxi union had earlier met Thakur at his Assembly office and submitted their demands, which he assured them would be taken up in the House.
