IGMC Shimla Organises Research Methodology Workshop in Collaboration with University of Illinois, USA

Shimla, November 3: Indira Gandhi Medical College (IGMC), Shimla, has organised a two-day Research Methodology Workshop in collaboration with the University of Illinois College of Medicine, USA, to strengthen research capabilities and promote academic collaboration in the medical sector.

The workshop, organised by the Multidisciplinary Research Unit (MRU) of IGMC, commenced with an address by the Regional Dean of the University of Illinois College of Medicine, who highlighted the importance of medical research in advancing scientific knowledge and improving patient care.

Around 30 faculty members from various departments of IGMC are participating in the programme. Three senior professors from the University of Illinois College of Medicine are conducting the training as part of efforts to strengthen academic and research collaboration under the recently signed Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) between the Himachal Pradesh government and the University of Illinois.

The workshop covers key areas of research methodology, including framing research questions, study design, biostatistics, grant writing and scientific publication. Practical sessions are also being conducted to equip participants with the skills required to develop quality research proposals.

Speaking on the occasion, IGMC Principal and MRU Chairperson Prof. Dr. Sita Thakur said that research was fundamental to medical education and quality patient care. She said the collaboration, under the leadership of Chief Minister Sukhvinder Singh Sukhu, would provide international exposure to faculty members and promote evidence-based medical practices in the state. She also appreciated the MRU’s efforts to strengthen the research culture at the institution.

The Department of Health Research (DHR), Government of India, has been supporting research activities at IGMC through the MRU, which was established in 2013. Currently, 11 research projects funded through the unit are underway at the institution. These projects are selected on merit by an independent expert committee comprising senior faculty members from PGIMER Chandigarh, ICMR and IGMC Shimla.

The collaboration is expected to create opportunities for joint research projects, faculty and student exchange programmes, and advanced training for young researchers in Himachal Pradesh, further strengthening the state’s medical research ecosystem.
