Historic Milestone: Colonel Sapna Rana, Ex-Cadet of 1HP Girls Battalion NCC Solan, Assumes Command

Solan, January 31: Colonel Sapna Rana, an esteemed alumna of 1HP Girls Bn NCC Solan, has etched her name in history as she takes on the role of the first Woman Commanding Officer to lead a Battalion from Himachal Pradesh. A native of a small hamlet in Solan district, Colonel Rana’s remarkable journey showcases her as the epitome of Nari Shakti, currently serving as the commanding officer of an Army Service Corps (ASC) Battalion in the North East.

Born to Mr. Rajender Thakur, a teacher, and Mrs. Krishna Thakur, a homemaker, Colonel Sapna Rana completed her schooling and graduation in Solan. Her trajectory toward military excellence commenced during her college days, where she served as the Senior Under Officer at 1 HP Girls NCC Battalion in Solan. Known for her dedication and discipline, she stood out as the lone NCC cadet from Himachal to be selected for the prestigious Kargil Vijay Camp at Kargil sector.

After successfully clearing the Service Selection Board, Colonel Rana joined the Officers Training Academy in Chennai in 2003. She earned her commission as a Lieutenant in the Indian Army in 2004, showcasing exceptional athleticism throughout her training. Her achievements include securing gold medals in cross country, obstacle training, and Academy endurance training.

Colonel Sapna Rana’s excellence extends beyond the military domain; she gained national recognition in Pistol & Trap shooting as part of the Army shooting team. Presently, she is an accomplished microlight pilot and an avid marathon runner.

As an ex-cadet of 1 HP Girls Battalion NCC Solan, Colonel Rana has brought immense pride to her alma mater, becoming the first Woman Commanding Officer. Her dedication and stellar performances in the Army have earned her the prestigious COAS & General Officer Commanding in Chief commendation cards three times. These accomplishments not only reflect her individual brilliance but also bring honor to her family and the entire state of Himachal Pradesh.
