Congress Attacked the Spirit of Baba Saheb’s Constitution: Anurag Thakur

Shimla April 26

On 26 April 2025, former Union Minister and Hamirpur MP Anurag Singh Thakur, while addressing a public meeting at Sundernagar, Mandi district under BJP’s Dr. B.R. Ambedkar Samman Abhiyan, highlighted the significant contributions of Baba Saheb Bhimrao Ambedkar in nation-building.

Anurag Thakur accused the Congress party of consistently undermining the spirit of the Constitution framed by Baba Saheb since India’s independence. He alleged that successive Congress governments attempted to dilute the Constitution through repeated amendments, driven by resentment towards a leader from a marginalized background who authored the Constitution. He cited instances like the Emergency under Indira Gandhi, which he said shredded constitutional values.

Thakur pointed out that Congress obstructed Ambedkar’s entry into the Constituent Assembly, and even during elections, Nehru actively campaigned against him. Despite facing electoral defeats engineered by Congress, Baba Saheb’s contributions remain unparalleled. He criticized Nehru for sidelining Ambedkar on economic and social policies and highlighted how Congress denied proper recognition to Ambedkar posthumously.

He praised Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s efforts to honor Ambedkar’s legacy, citing initiatives like the development of Panchteerth, the declaration of Constitution Day, and the establishment of the Dr. Ambedkar International Centre. He emphasized that it was a non-Congress government that awarded Ambedkar the Bharat Ratna, while Congress leaders prioritized self-honors.
