Dharamshala | July 29, 2026: The Bureau of Indian Standards (BIS) organised an awareness and sensitisation programme for district-level officers at the Deputy Commissioner’s Office in Dharamshala on Wednesday. Additional Deputy Commissioner Vinay Kumar attended the event as the chief guest.
Addressing the programme, Vinay Kumar said the initiative was aimed at creating awareness among officials about BIS quality standards, consumer protection and the importance of certified products. He said consumers can ensure the quality and safety of products by purchasing ISI-certified items. The ISI mark signifies that a product has been manufactured in accordance with Indian standards and meets prescribed quality and safety norms.
During the session, BIS Joint Director, Parwanoo Branch, Shubham Tiwari briefed officials on identifying ISI marks, BIS Standard Marks and Hallmarks, explaining their authenticity and significance for consumers.
He advised consumers to always check the hallmark before purchasing gold jewellery. Every hallmarked jewellery item must display the BIS logo, purity grade and a six-digit HUID code. Consumers can verify the HUID number through the BIS Care mobile application.
He added that consumers can use the BIS website to verify licences, obtain information on ISI and BIS-certified products, and lodge quality-related complaints. Consumer grievances can also be registered through the National Consumer Helpline at 14404 or the toll-free number 1800-11-4000.
The Joint Director said BIS digital services also allow stakeholders to propose new standards, become members of technical committees and access information on Indian standards. The BIS Care app enables users to verify product certification, licence holders and hallmarked jewellery. The BIS portal also provides information on BIS offices, laboratories, licence holders and hallmarking centres.
He informed participants that BIS has made ISI certification mandatory for several consumer and industrial products to ensure safety and quality. These include electric motors, distribution transformers, LPG cylinders, valves and regulators, LPG rubber hoses, air conditioners, electrical cables, switches, plugs and sockets, helmets, toys, food mixers, hand blenders, mobile phones, laptops, printers, televisions, microwave ovens, automobile tyres and various medical devices.
