High-Density Apple Farming: Profitable Shift Amid Changing Climate in Himachal

1 min read

Shimla April 08
Aman Sharma, a progressive apple grower from Rohru, Himachal Pradesh, exemplifies how adopting modern techniques can overcome climate challenges and boost income. In 2019, Aman took a bold step by uprooting his traditional apple trees and replacing them with 1000 high-density plants on the same land. With guidance from the Horticulture Department of Himachal Pradesh, he received training in soil management, irrigation, disease control, and proper pruning techniques.

By 2023, his new orchard began yielding fruit — superior in color, taste, and market appeal. The shorter gestation period and higher yield density brought him returns much sooner than the traditional varieties. Aman now earns significantly more from the same land, setting a benchmark for other farmers in the region.

His success highlights the potential of high-density farming in adapting to reduced chilling hours and changing weather patterns. With government support and scientific intervention, Aman Sharma’s story is a beacon of hope for apple growers facing climatic and economic uncertainties.
