1 min read

Nahan, May 5 – As part of its commitment to safeguarding forest wealth and generating rural employment, the Himachal Pradesh government has initiated the Van Mitra Yojana. In Sirmaur district, 203 newly appointed Van Mitras are currently undergoing intensive training to prepare them for field deployment.

The initiative aims not only to strengthen forest protection mechanisms but also to provide gainful employment to local youth. According to Sirmaur DFO Vasant Kiran, the district comprises four forest divisions—Nahan, Paonta Sahib, Renukaji, and Rajgarh—where training is being conducted at two designated centres in each division.

The five-day training program is designed to familiarise Van Mitras with departmental operations, their roles and responsibilities, field reporting, and essential protocols during the fire season. The program also includes field visits to offer hands-on experience in forest conservation practices.

The induction of Van Mitras is expected to significantly enhance the department’s manpower, particularly during the vulnerable summer months when forest fires are most prevalent. Their presence will aid in curbing fire incidents and protecting wildlife and natural resources, thus serving as a vital link between forest authorities and communities.
