Day 2 of XXVIII Rev. Dr. Samuel Slater Memorial Invitational Inter-School English Debates Witnesses Fierce Rhetorical Battles at Bishop Cotton School, Shimla

Shimla, May 7, 2025 – Day 2 of the prestigious XXVIII Rev. Dr. Samuel Slater Memorial Invitational Inter-School English Debates began with a soulful service in the historic Holy Trinity Chapel at Bishop Cotton School (BCS), offering participants a glimpse into the school’s rich heritage.

The debates kicked off with a gripping round between Bishop Cotton School (Light Blue) and Auckland House School for Boys on the motion “All student loans need to be forgiven.” With compelling arguments, Aarav Wadaskar of BCS clinched Best Speaker, and the motion was carried, marking a strong start for the Cottonians.

Next, Cathedral and John Connon School, Mumbai faced Vivek High School on the motion “AI is approaching the capability to surpass human intelligence in decision making.” Armed with data and conviction, Cathedral emerged victorious.

In a close contest, Bishop Cotton (Dark Blue) debated La Martiniere Girls on “Abstract Art lacks Universal Meaning.” Despite powerful rebuttals, La Martiniere Girls secured the win.

The final morning clash saw La Martiniere Boys take on Auckland House School on banning fast foods in school canteens – a debate they won convincingly.

The afternoon session kept the momentum alive. Both BCS teams scored wins—Light Blue over St. Stephen’s Chandigarh and Dark Blue over St. Thomas School, Shimla. Vivek High impressed once again, defeating Vasant Valley School on “Social media has improved relationships.”

The day concluded with a high-stakes debate between GEMS Education, Dubai and La Martiniere for Boys on the controversial topic “All schools today must have armed security guards.” The motion was passed, giving La Martiniere Boys another strong win.

As the competition heats up, Day 2 has proven to be a powerhouse of talent, intellect, and oratory brilliance. Anticipation builds for the next rounds.
