CWC Kangra Seeks Status Report in Death of 16-Year-Old Student

Dharamshala, August 31, 2026: The District Child Welfare Committee (CWC), Kangra, has taken serious cognisance of the death of a 16-year-old student, Abhilash, son of Sanjay Chaudhary, under suspicious circumstances in the Jaisinghpur area and sought a status report from Lambagaon Police Station.

The matter was discussed during a meeting chaired by CWC Kangra Chairman Vikramjit Sharma. Committee members Vijay Kumar and Nareshta Kumari were also present.

According to the information available to the committee, the student had left home on the evening of August 27 to attend tuition classes at Upper Lambagaon, following which he went missing. The following day, he was found in a critical condition near a roadside close to his home. He was initially taken for medical treatment and later referred to Dr. Rajendra Prasad Government Medical College, Tanda, where he died. Police have registered an FIR and are investigating the matter.

Taking cognisance of the case from the perspective of child protection and child rights, the CWC has directed the concerned police station to submit a status report covering the progress of the investigation, the circumstances from the time the child went missing until he reached the hospital, and the facts established so far.

The committee said that every aspect surrounding the child’s death must be examined through a fair and sensitive investigation. It will also examine whether there was any lapse in ensuring the child’s safety, protection or access to timely assistance.

CWC Chairman Vikramjit Sharma said the safety and protection of children remain the committee’s highest priority. He said the committee would examine the available facts and reports from the concerned departments before taking further action or making recommendations in the best interests of the child.

The committee has directed the police to submit the status report within the stipulated timeframe. Further action will be decided after the report is received and reviewed.
