Jairam Thakur Targets Sukhu Government Over Congress Guarantees, Hails India’s 7.8% GDP Growth

Shimla, August 31, 2026: Former Himachal Pradesh Chief Minister and Leader of Opposition Jairam Thakur criticised the Congress-led state government, alleging that it has failed to fulfil the ten guarantees promised to voters during the Assembly elections.

Thakur said the Congress had campaigned extensively on its ten guarantees, including ₹1,500 monthly assistance for women, five lakh new jobs, 300 units of free electricity, procurement of cow dung from farmers and a startup scheme for youth. He alleged that nearly four years into the government’s tenure, the Chief Minister and Congress leaders were avoiding accountability on the status of these promises.

He said the government should provide the people of Himachal Pradesh with a clear account of the ten guarantees instead of making new claims. Thakur alleged that the government’s tenure had been marked by “broken promises” and criticised the Congress for what he termed an attempt to divert attention from its commitments.

Thakur also said that people would remember the alleged non-fulfilment of the promises and hold the Congress accountable in the next Assembly elections.

Thakur Praises India’s 7.8% GDP Growth

In a separate statement, Jairam Thakur welcomed India’s 7.8% real GDP growth in the first quarter of financial year 2026-27, attributing the performance to Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s leadership and economic policies.

He said India’s real GDP during the April-June quarter stood at ₹81.36 lakh crore, compared with ₹75.46 lakh crore during the corresponding period of the previous year, while nominal GDP registered 10.3% growth.

Thakur highlighted growth of 8.2% in real GVA, 8.6% in the secondary sector and 10% in the services sector. He also cited an 11.9% increase in Gross Fixed Capital Formation and 7.1% growth in private final consumption expenditure.

He said the figures reflected the resilience and expanding strength of the Indian economy despite global economic challenges. According to Thakur, India is moving rapidly towards becoming an economic powerhouse and laying a strong foundation for achieving the vision of a Viksit Bharat.
