Lumpy Skin Disease Vaccination Launched in Campaign Mode in Kangra
Dharamshala, August 31, 2026: The Animal Husbandry Department has launched a campaign-mode vaccination drive to prevent the spread of Lumpy Skin Disease (LSD) among livestock, Deputy Director Animal Husbandry Dr. Seema Guleriya said on Sunday.
She said 1.35 lakh vaccine doses have been received by the department, of which around 15,000 animals have been vaccinated so far. Departmental teams are also maintaining continuous surveillance of infected animals.
Dr. Guleriya said animals affected by Lumpy Skin Disease may develop symptoms including high fever, hard nodules on the skin, discharge from the eyes and nose, lethargy, reduced appetite and a decline in milk production.
She said the movement and trading of livestock from Punjab and Haryana has contributed to the increase in cases in Himachal Pradesh. She urged livestock owners to immediately isolate infected animals from healthy ones and maintain proper cleanliness and hygiene in cattle sheds. Measures should also be taken to control flies and mosquitoes, which can contribute to the spread of the disease.
Livestock owners have been advised to avoid buying or selling animals during the period of infection and not to allow their animals to graze in common pastures. They have also been urged to contact the Animal Husbandry Department immediately if any animal shows unusual symptoms associated with Lumpy Skin Disease.
