Advocacy and Outreach Programme Highlights Vision for Modern Digital Library in Solan

Solan, August 24: The Department of Higher Education, Himachal Pradesh, organised an Advocacy and Outreach Programme at the Central State Library, Solan, focusing on transforming the historic library into a modern, modular and digitally enabled knowledge centre.

The programme was chaired by Prof. Shalini Lahitkar of the Department of Library and Information Science, Maharashtra. She highlighted the changing role of libraries in the digital age and stressed the need to introduce modern technology and user-centric digital services.

Prof. Lahitkar said advocacy and outreach initiatives can play an important role in connecting libraries with students, teachers and the wider community. She emphasised creating greater awareness about modern library facilities and digital resources.

Deepanjan Chatterjee highlighted the role of the National Mission on Libraries in strengthening library infrastructure, technology and services. He appreciated the efforts being undertaken to modernise the Central State Library, Solan.

The proposed modern, modular and digital library is expected to improve digital services, strengthen infrastructure, provide better access to information resources and support the preservation and accessibility of rare books, manuscripts and other valuable materials.

Dr Rajendra Kashyap, In-charge of the Central State Library, welcomed the guests and spoke about the library’s historical significance, existing facilities and future development plans.

A special book exhibition was also organised, showcasing Hindi and English books across various subjects for students and library users.

Around 200 students, along with librarians from schools across the district, officials and other dignitaries, attended the programme. Officials from the Higher Education Department, including OSD Dr Renu Rana, Meena Devi and Principal of Government College Solan Dr Shalini, were also present.

Assistant Librarian Sanjeev Kumar delivered the vote of thanks.
