Law Students Briefed on NALSA Schemes and Free Legal Aid Services

Bhoranj, August 12: The District Legal Services Authority organised a legal awareness programme at Career Point University, Kharwar, on Wednesday, where LLB students were briefed about various schemes of the National Legal Services Authority (NALSA).

Secretary of the District Legal Services Authority, Kuldeep Sharma, said NALSA has introduced several schemes to make justice accessible to the common people, with the free legal aid scheme being one of its key initiatives.

He said members of Scheduled Castes and Scheduled Tribes, women, children, persons with disabilities, disaster victims, victims of atrocities, workers, transgender persons, prisoners and people from all categories with an annual income below ₹3 lakh are eligible for free legal aid.

He explained that the application process is simple and eligible persons can approach the Front Office established at any court complex to apply for free legal assistance. NALSA has also introduced schemes to support victims of human trafficking, people living in slums, workers in the unorganised sector, persons affected by drug addiction and women facing various forms of abuse, including acid attacks.

Kuldeep Sharma said people can also seek information and assistance through the NALSA helpline at 15100. He added that the District Legal Services Authority can be contacted on 01972-224399 or through email for further assistance. Panel advocates and para-legal volunteers are also made available to provide free legal aid.

He urged the LLB students to contribute towards making justice accessible to the public and said their responsibility extends beyond studying law. They should use their legal knowledge for the benefit of society and create awareness among people about their rights.

The students were also briefed about Lok Adalats, mediation and other legal services. During the programme, students raised questions related to various legal issues and judicial procedures, which Kuldeep Sharma answered in detail.

He appreciated the legal aid and social awareness initiatives being undertaken for students at Career Point University.

Head of the Law Department, Dr. Manu Sharma, expressed gratitude to Kuldeep Sharma for guiding the students.
