Emergency Was Murder of Constitution, Says Jairam Thakur

1 min read

Shimla, June 25: Leader of Opposition and former Himachal Pradesh Chief Minister Jairam Thakur described the Emergency imposed on June 25, 1975, as the “murder of the Constitution” and one of the darkest chapters in India’s democratic history, holding the Congress and former Prime Minister Indira Gandhi responsible for it.

In a statement issued from Shimla, Thakur alleged that the Congress had undermined democratic institutions during the Emergency and accused the present state government of attempting to weaken democracy by delaying Panchayat and local body elections. He also criticised the Congress for its stance on constitutional issues, saying those responsible for the Emergency had no moral authority to speak on protecting the Constitution.

Separately, four elected representatives from the Nankhari Block Committee in Rampur Assembly constituency—Kanta Khund, Chiranjee Lal, Mintu Mehta, and Amar Singh Kalta—joined the BJP along with their supporters. Thakur said the leaders were influenced by the BJP’s development-oriented policies and expressed dissatisfaction with the functioning of the state government.
