Nauni University Explores Indo-Australian Collaboration to Tackle Apple Replant Disease

To address the growing challenge of Apple Replant Disease (ARD) in Himachal Pradesh, Dr YS Parmar University of Horticulture and Forestry, Nauni is exploring a research collaboration with Australia-based Tri-Nations Orchard System Holdings Ltd.

As part of this initiative, the company’s Senior Advisor, Kim Russell, visited the University and held discussions on a proposed Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) to establish a joint research programme on Apple Replant Disease, a major factor affecting orchard productivity and sustainability.

The meeting was attended by Director of Research Dr. Devina Vaidya and advisory members Director of Extension Education Dr DP Sharma, Head of the Department of Plant Pathology Dr Anil Handa, Joint Director Training Dr PK Baweja along with Joint Director Dr Pradeep Kumar, Dr. Manica Tomar, Dr Shalini Verma, Dr Neena Chauhan and Dr Anjali Chauhan who discussed the expertise and potential contributions of both institutions. Key areas of discussion included orchard rejuvenation through improved soil health, top-working of ageing orchards with superior scion material and light interception trials to enhance fruit colour, quality and yield.

Tri-Nations Orchard System Holdings also shared its experience of working in Australia, Africa and India, particularly in natural composting and sustainable orchard management. The utilisation of horticultural by-products, including apple pomace generated by processing units, was also explored as a means of improving soil health and reducing waste.

Vice-Chancellor Dr. H.S. Baweja said that the increasing prevalence of Apple Replant Disease, coupled with the decline of ageing apple orchards in Himachal Pradesh, has become a major concern affecting productivity and farmer incomes. He stressed the need for science-driven solutions and international collaboration to address these challenges.

Dr. Baweja added that the discussions on a proposed partnership envisions a joint research framework involving advanced soil DNA diagnostics, development of testing protocols, scientist exchange programmes and multidisciplinary strategies for ARD management.

The proposed Indo-Australian initiative reflects the University’s commitment to scientific innovation and global cooperation, with the long-term goal of enhancing orchard productivity, improving sustainability, and supporting the transformation of Himachal Pradesh’s apple sector.
