Jairam Thakur Questions Excise Policy, Alleges Revenue Loss to Himachal

1 min read

Mandi, June 2: Former Himachal Pradesh Chief Minister and Leader of Opposition Jairam Thakur has accused the Sukhu government of failing to achieve its stated goals of increasing excise revenue and alleged that recent changes in liquor licensing policies have adversely affected the state’s finances.

In a statement issued from Mandi, Thakur claimed that a Telangana-based company awarded liquor vending rights in the Kullu, Lahaul-Spiti and Pangi region was unable to deposit its licence fee on time, leading to the sealing of liquor vends by authorities. He alleged that the development raises concerns about the government’s excise policy and revenue management.

The BJP leader further claimed that the state government’s promises of significant growth in excise revenue have not been reflected in actual figures. Citing official data, he alleged that excise revenue growth remained below expectations during the Congress government’s tenure compared to previous years.

Thakur also criticized the government for what he described as policy experimentation in the excise sector and demanded greater transparency regarding revenue collection and financial outcomes. He said the government should explain the expected benefits of its excise reforms to the people of the state.

Later, Thakur met newly elected Panchayati Raj representatives at his residence in Tandi and extended his best wishes for their future responsibilities.
