Shimla Makes Police Verification Mandatory for Migrant Workers and Tenants Till September 30

Shimla, Aug 2 : District Magistrate Anupam Kashyap has made police registration and verification mandatory for migrant workers, street vendors, hawkers, and other temporary workers residing in the district to strengthen law and order and prevent criminal incidents.

Under the order issued under Section 163 of the Bharatiya Nagarik Suraksha Sanhita (BNSS), employers, contractors, traders, farmers, and other establishments must ensure that migrant workers submit their details, along with a passport-sized photograph, at the nearest police station before being engaged in any informal employment, contractual work, or self-employment.

The order also directs landlords to verify the identity and police antecedents of tenants before renting out accommodation. Migrant workers and other outsiders will not be allowed to undertake employment in the district without completing registration at the police station within their jurisdiction.

The administration said the move aims to facilitate police investigations in case of any untoward incident and improve public safety. Violations of the order may invite legal action under Section 223 of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS). The order will remain in force until September 30, 2026.
