Jairam Thakur Questions Move to Keep Vigilance, ACB Outside RTI

1 min read

Dharamshala, March 14: Former Chief Minister and Leader of Opposition Jairam Thakur criticized the state government’s reported move to keep the Vigilance and Anti-Corruption Bureau outside the ambit of the Right to Information Act, alleging that the decision undermines transparency and democratic principles.

Addressing the media during his visit to Dharamshala, Thakur said the step raises serious questions about the government’s commitment to accountability. He argued that the RTI Act clearly allows exemption only for agencies involved in sensitive intelligence and security operations, whereas vigilance and anti-corruption bodies are meant to investigate corruption.

The Leader of Opposition further alleged that such a major decision should be taken only through proper legislative procedures and approval of the state assembly. He claimed the move appears aimed at shielding corruption-related investigations from public scrutiny and urged the government to reconsider the decision.

Thakur also expressed gratitude to Narendra Modi and Amit Shah for approving an additional ₹288.39 crore disaster assistance for Himachal Pradesh to support rehabilitation in areas affected by natural calamities in 2025.

During his visit to Dharamshala, Thakur also welcomed C. P. Radhakrishnan on his first visit to the state and attended a programme at the Central University of Himachal Pradesh, describing the Vice President’s address as inspiring for students and faculty.
