Shimla, March 1, 2026: A training workshop for officials and staff of Shimla district was inaugurated at Bachat Bhawan for the first phase of Census 2027 — House Listing Operation (HLO). The training will be conducted in two batches from March 1–3 and March 5–7, 2026.
Director of Census Operations, Deep Shikha Sharma, stated that Census 2027 will be India’s first fully digital census. Data collection will be carried out through a mobile application and web portal to ensure transparency, speed, and efficiency. She urged officials to complete their responsibilities within the stipulated timelines.
The first phase (HLO) in Himachal Pradesh will be conducted from May 12 to June 11, 2026. The second phase is proposed for February 2027, while in snow-bound areas it will be completed in September 2026. A self-enumeration facility will also be introduced, allowing citizens to log in to the portal, submit their details, and receive a self-enumeration ID for verification by enumerators.
Deputy Commissioner Anupam Kashyap described the census as the foundation of nation-building and a test of administrative credibility and transparency. He assured full administrative support for smooth execution of the exercise.
Census 2027 will be the 16th census since 1872 and the 8th after Independence. The last census was conducted in 2011. Advanced digital platforms, including a self-enumeration portal, mobile app, block creator portal, and census management and monitoring system, will be used for data collection and supervision.
