Shimla, Jan 30, 2026: On the occasion of Leprosy Eradication Day, Deputy Commissioner Shimla Anupam Kashyap administered a pledge at the DC Office to eliminate discrimination against leprosy patients and promote social inclusion.
Chief Medical Officer Shimla Dr Yashpal Ranta informed that district-level celebrations were also held at the Government Industrial Training Institute (ITI), Chhota Shimla (Chaudha Maidan). The day is observed every year on January 30 to raise awareness about leprosy, encourage treatment and remove social stigma associated with the disease.
This year’s programme was organised on the theme “Leprosy is Curable, the Real Challenge is Social Stigma.” A speech competition was conducted at the ITI campus in the presence of Principal Kartik Thakur, where winners and participants were awarded.
Dr Ranta explained that leprosy is caused by the bacterium Mycobacterium leprae and has no relation to religious beliefs or myths. He said it is a long-term infection affecting skin and nerves, leading to symptoms such as numbness, wounds and muscle weakness, but it is completely curable with timely treatment. Free medicines are available at government health institutions.
Around 250 students and teachers took the pledge to support leprosy patients and end discrimination. Awareness programmes are also being conducted at block levels across the district.
The CMO appealed to the public to remain alert to early symptoms of leprosy for timely diagnosis and treatment, and to show compassion towards patients while helping them integrate into society.
