Shimla, November 11: The Himachal Pradesh Language & Culture Department, in collaboration with Rajiv Gandhi Government College, Chaura Maidan, inaugurated a seven-day training workshop on the ancient North Indian script Sharada at Gaiety Theatre. The opening session was held at 11 AM, where Secretary (Language & Culture) Rakesh Kanwar lit the ceremonial lamp as the chief guest.

The workshop is being conducted by scholar Neelam Rajdan Vali, who holds a postgraduate degree in Management Studies from Mumbai University and has over 15 years of experience in corporate research and finance.

Department Director Reema Kashyap highlighted that the Sharada script originated in the north-western Indian subcontinent and developed from the Gupta script in the 8th century. It was used mainly for Sanskrit and Prakrit texts, particularly religious and administrative manuscripts of early-medieval Kashmir.

Addressing the participants, the chief guest said the workshop—open both online and offline—offers a valuable opportunity to learn an ancient script and reconnect with India’s cultural heritage. In the second session, Dr. Ravi Kiran, Associate Professor, IIT Hyderabad, delivered an online lecture on Sharada script.

Around 150 participants of all age groups are attending the workshop. The event was moderated by Deputy Director Kusum, and attended by departmental officials and faculty members of Rajiv Gandhi Government College.
