India’s Partition Was One of Humanity’s Greatest Tragedies: Jairam Thakur

Shimla, August 14, 2026: Former Himachal Pradesh Chief Minister and Leader of Opposition Jairam Thakur said that the Partition of India was one of the greatest tragedies in human history and that its painful legacy should never be forgotten.

On Partition Horrors Remembrance Day, Thakur said more than 15 million people were displaced and lakhs lost their lives during Partition. He said remembering the tragedy should not be about reopening old wounds, but about learning from the mistakes of the past and preventing their repetition.

Thakur said the day provides an opportunity to pay tribute to those who suffered during Partition and to strengthen national unity, social harmony and human values. He called upon citizens to contribute actively towards building a developed and self-reliant India.

On the occasion of the 80th Independence Day, Thakur also extended his greetings to the people of Himachal Pradesh and hoisted the national flag at his residence under the ‘Har Ghar Tiranga’ campaign. He urged people to contribute towards the vision of Viksit Bharat@2047 with dedication and commitment.
