Kullu, Sept 5: Former Chief Minister and Leader of Opposition Jairam Thakur today visited disaster-hit areas of Akhara Bazaar, Inner Akhara Bazaar, Jhingri sliding point, Parla, and Bhuntar in Kullu district. He met the affected families, expressed condolences, and assured them of support.
Addressing the media, Thakur said that the scale of damage across Himachal Pradesh continues to rise, with Kullu, Chamba, and Mandi bearing severe losses this monsoon. “The disaster is a great punishment. If we have committed any mistake, may the deities forgive us and keep their blessings upon us,” he remarked.
Thakur criticized the state government, alleging that instead of providing timely relief, it was more focused on political statements and blaming the Centre. He said Chief Minister Sukhvinder Singh Sukhu must step beyond politics and take direct responsibility for relief measures.
Highlighting gaps since the 2023 disaster, Thakur alleged that no significant remedial steps were taken despite repeated warnings. “For two years, identified vulnerable spots remain unattended, debris lies uncleared, and preventive measures are missing,” he said.
He further questioned whether the financial aid provided by the Centre in 2023 was fully utilized for disaster relief and preparedness. “The first responsibility lies with the state government, not the Centre. Whenever the state requested, the Centre provided assistance immediately, including Army helicopters for Mani Mahesh Yatra rescue operations,” he stated.
Thakur added that over ₹5,000 crore had already been provided by the Centre for disaster assistance and urged the state to focus on accelerating relief and rehabilitation rather than engaging in blame games.
BJP leaders Maheshwar Singh, Govind Thakur, Surender Shourie, Inder Singh Gandhi, and Narottam Thakur accompanied him during the visit.
