Dictatorship Has No Place in Democracy: Jairam

1 min read

Mandi, May 4, 2025 – Leader of the Opposition and former Chief Minister Jairam Thakur has strongly criticized the Himachal Pradesh government for what he termed as “dictatorial” action against protesting teachers. During his visit to his home constituency Seraj, Thakur said that the government is acting in direct contradiction to democratic values by suspending and filing false cases against over 900 teachers who were raising genuine demands.

“Democracy cannot run through tyranny,” he asserted, highlighting that the Primary Teachers Association had written to the government on April 16, but instead of dialogue, the government chose repression. “Teachers, whose primary role is to educate, are now protesting for salaries and fair treatment while the government looks the other way,” he added.

Thakur questioned the lack of preparedness for the academic session, noting that the government seems unconcerned about children’s education. He urged the Chief Minister to engage in meaningful dialogue rather than retaliation.

As part of the BJP’s state-wide Ambedkar Samman Sampark Abhiyan, Thakur met with SC and ST community members in Khunagi and Khaneri villages. Emphasizing Babasaheb Ambedkar’s lifelong struggle for social justice and equality, Thakur stated, “True democracy is incomplete without social justice.” He also criticized Congress for repeatedly disrespecting Ambedkar’s legacy, noting that many honors were only bestowed after BJP’s political rise.
