Tikam Ram, a Ghor Daur, Kullu visionary, is transforming the landscape of apple cultivation with his pioneering approach to high-density orchards. At 46, Ram stands as a beacon of innovation and perseverance, having embarked on a groundbreaking journey in 2014 that defied conventional agricultural norms and reshaped the apple farming industry in Kullu.

Born into a middle-class family, Ram’s early years were spent managing livestock and cultivating paddy, with a gradual shift towards vegetable farming. In 2010, his fascination with high-density apple-growing techniques from the West ignited a revolutionary idea. Despite facing fierce opposition and ridicule from locals who called him a lunatic for replacing mature Red Delicious apple trees, Ram’s unwavering resolve and faith in his vision proved triumphant. Today, those who once doubted him are reaping the rewards of his innovative methods.

In 2015, Ram introduced cutting-edge apple varieties such as Jeromine, Superchief, and Redlum Gala. His innovative approach allows one bhiga of high-density plants to accommodate 300–400 trees, dramatically increasing from the 30-35 trees typical of traditional methods. This advancement means that high-density orchards, which reach the market before August, can generate up to 6.5 lakh INR per bhiga—more than double the revenue from conventional plants.

Ram’s dedication goes beyond mere innovation; he champions a holistic approach that integrates economic growth with environmental stewardship. He has planted approximately 7,500 cedar trees, 1,500 of which have flourished into a verdant grove in Nathaan village. His advocacy for reducing chemical usage and promoting sustainable farming practices underscores his commitment to preserving the environment while boosting agricultural productivity.

A proponent of local employment and entrepreneurship, Ram envisions a future where agriculture and horticulture not only sustain communities but also foster new business opportunities. He believes in creating start-ups in Apple marketing and byproduct manufacturing, which could potentially evolve into successful enterprises.
