Controversy Surrounds Driver Recruitment in Shimla Municipal Corporation

2 min read

Shimla, September 29: Shimla Municipal Corporation is facing allegations of irregularities in the recruitment of drivers, with suspicions raised regarding the appointment of relatives to most of the positions. The matter is expected to be raised in the Municipal Corporation session scheduled for Friday.

Following the previous controversies surrounding sanitary inspectors, the recruitment of drivers in the Municipal Corporation has also come under scrutiny. Allegedly, many of the appointed drivers from the Saehab Society and outsourcing agencies are relatives of officers and employees of the Municipal Corporation. It has been alleged that out of 63 positions filled, more than 25 were occupied by relatives.

These appointments include sons, brothers, and nephews of existing staff members. Some of these recruitments took place before 2020, while over 30 positions were filled between 2021 and 2022. Local employees of the Municipal Corporation have also raised concerns over these appointments.

The Municipal Corporation claims that all appointments have been made in accordance with the rules, but the high number of relatives appointed to various positions has raised questions. Councilor Saroj Thakur has raised this issue in the Municipal Corporation session, prompting the Municipal Administration to present a detailed report on driver recruitment in the session.

This controversy follows previous revelations concerning the removal of illegal constructions and other issues in the Municipal Corporation. Several proposals will be discussed in the session, including the installation of LED lights, payment of rent for closed godowns, non-implementation of rainwater harvesting in smart city shops, and addressing the issue of stray dogs causing threats. The issue of not removing illegal constructions is also expected to be addressed in the session.
