Energy use to grow 25% by 2030

As India’s growth story unfolds, its demand for energy and resources is set to rise. Energy use has doubled in the last 20 years and is likely to grow by at least another 25% by 2030. Major sectors like mobility and industrial production are significantly dependent on imported fossil fuels.
“India has added 2,900 substations and upgraded almost about 3000 odd substations. We’ve installed 7.5 lakh transformers as a result of which the availability of power in rural areas went up from about 12 hrs in 2015 to 22.5 hrs today. Moreover, at a time when we’re seeing mayhem in worldwide energy prices, and energy prices have doubled and tripled in various parts of
Europe, India’s energy prices have remained constant.”
The rapid increase in demand, our power demands have grown 12-12.5% in the last quarter, and 10.6 percent over last year. It is estimated that daily demand has grown by roughly 25000 MW over the corresponding window last year. India’s installed power generation capacity is expected to swell to 800 GW by 2030. Against this backdrop, the Energy Conservation (Amendment) Bill 2022 was introduced in Lok Sabha in August 2022. Therefore, there is a need for collaborative efforts between the Central and State Governments towards the large-scale deployment of energy efficiency measures in potential sectors of the economy.
Our today’s programme on MuDSM is also the commitment of Bureau of Energy Efficiency (BEE), Government of India to support Directorate of Energy (DoE), Government of Himachal Pradesh in creating awareness and bringing in methodologies of Energy Efficiency and Energy Conservation in our departments or major consumers of electricity in the Districts and State.
The workshop today was attended by more than 40 participants from various departments i.e. Shimla Municipal Corporation, Shimla Smart City Ltd., Solan Municipal Council, HPSEBL, HPSPCB, HPPWD, Himachal Pradesh Road Transport Corporation and Jal Shakti Vibhag which was executed with the assistance of Federation of Indian Chambers of Commerce & Industry
(FICCI) on May 19, 2023 at Hotel Holiday Home, Shimla.
The workshop was inaugurated by Shri D P Gupta, Chief Engineer, Directorate of Energy, Government of Himachal Pradesh who stressed on the need of Energy conservation in the municipalities, as 3-4% of energy is consumed by MCs in the country, and there is a huge scope for energy savings. It is high time to put necessary policies and institutional frameworks in place and start implementing large scale programs around unconventional resources like DSM, Energy Efficiency and Renewable Energy.
The theme address was given by Mr. Mandeep Singh, Chief Engineer-Commercial, Directorate of Energy, Government of Himachal Pradesh. He emphasized to practice energy conservation, energy efficiency, water & wastewater management and adopting EE best management practices in their operations to optimise cost.
Er. Manoj Kumar, Dy. Chief Engineer, Directorate of Energy, Government of Himachal Pradesh spoke about the LiFE mission which is to inculcate and adopt habits and best practices to save the environment, adopt energy efficiency & energy conservation practices in our day to day life so that climate change impact & vulnerability can be reduced globally.
The technical sessions were organised on ECBC, Building Energy Efficiency, Smart City Development and integration of Energy Efficiency in the developmental planning, EV Charging infrastructure, Various Financing Models for Urban Local Bodies, Energy Efficiency Measures in City Drinking Water Pumping etc.
All participants were given participation certificates at the end of the programme.
